The cultural centre of Chiapas. We'll head straight into the action in the cloud forests of San Cristobal looking for the Pink-headed Warbler, Black-throated Jay, and Wine-throated Hummingbird.

An afternoon of culture at the mixed-cultures church of Chamula and flower markets in Zinacantan.

At night we'll join a local guide to look for the Bearded Screech Owl, Whiskered Screech Owl and the insanely rare Unspotted Saw-whet Owl.

A morning at the impressive Sumidero Canyon, starting at the spectacular viewpoints where we'll find the Flammulated Flycatcher, Gartered Trogon, Red-breasted Chat, and more. Late morning we'll take a boat ride through the canyon alongside the numerous waterbirds, crocodiles and spider monkeys.

A slap-up local dinner awaits in San Cristobal in preparation for our trip to....

Day 3 - Montebello Lakes

Our hunt for the legendary Resplendent Quetzal begins.
But first a stop at the Tenam Puente archaeological ruins to see the Slender Sheartail, a little known and minute hummingbird endemic to central America.

An afternoon in the wetlands around Montebello Lakes National Park followed by an evening in the forests looking for nightbirds before the morning's adventure.

The Quetzal - A truly special bird that inspired ancient and modern cultures alike. We'll dedicate our morning looking for this near-mythical being, but with plenty of opportunities to see other less-celebrated but illustrious birds such as the Azure-hooded Jay, Northern Emerald Toucanet, and more.

In the afternoon we'll visit an orchid garden, guided by the local women who set up the project in the fight to protect these delicate plants from wildfires that ravaged the region in the 90s.

Day 4 - In search of the Quetzal

Day 5 - Welcome to the jungle

Into the jungle we go at the Palenque archaeological ruins. Home of the great Mayan ruler Pakal and his custom built Temple of the Inscriptions. We'll have a guided tour of this ancient landmark and learn to decipher the Mayan code before birding the jungle. Keel-billed Toucans, Chestnut-colored Woodpeckers, Red-capped Manakins, and so much more await.
